7개월 동안 변성재를 만날 수 없었다. 그리고 그의 집에 종종 드나들던 우리들도 뭉칠 수 없었다. 오랜만에 그에게 연락이 왔을 때, 나는 반가움에 첫 만남까지 떠올릴 수 있었다.

그날은 밴드결성을 위해 홍대로 향하던 날이었다. 평일 밤이었고 서로의 얼굴은 정확히 몰랐다. 내가 서 있있던 길 건너편에서 나와 비슷한 차림의 남자를 발견했다. 저 사람일지도 모른다는 생각을 했다. 앞머리에 두 눈이 거의 뒤덮인 얼굴을 한눈에 알아채기란 쉽지 않았지만, 어쨌든 그가 꼭 아티스트면 좋겠다고 생각했다. 내 눈엔 이미 그런 모습에 가까웠다.

다행히 그는 만나기로 한 정시의 시간에 맞춰 내가 서 있는 카페로 걸어오고 있었다. 어색함 속에 대뜸 커피를 사겠다는 그의 친절에 당황한 나는 단칼에 무안을 줬고, 2층 테라스에 앉아 기본적인 인사부터 나눴다.

우린 정말 인사만을 나눴다. 커피가 다 식어가도록 말없이 말보로만 피워댔고 어느새 두시간이 흘렀다. 다행히 그가 먼저 내게 질문해주었다. “그럼, 어떤 음악을 좋아하세요?” 나는 순간 이 뻔한 질문이 너무도 순수하고 진실하게 와닿아서 평소처럼 간단히 대답하기 어려웠다. 익숙히 들어왔던 질문이었음에도 불구하고, 거침없이 말하거나 길게 망설이지도 말아야겠단 생각을 했다. 평소보다 정성 들였을 것이다.

그러나 지금은 쉽게 대답할 수 있다. 나는 캔디(CANDY)라는 밴드를 좋아하고 특히 이번 싱글<Beautiful Shoes>을 아낀다고. 이제까지 비춰진 캔디(CANDY)의 음악적 행보와 다르게 팝스러운 기타 리프와 보컬, 그리고 가냘픈 느낌의 댄서블함이 내게는 변성재를 처음 만나게 된 날의 향수를 불러일으켜 줬기 때문이다.

<Beautiful Shoes>는 지난 7개월을 맞바꾼 결과물이다. 음악가로서 성숙해지는 것에 여러 요소가 있지만 나는 그 과정에 반드시 자신도 모르게 처음으로 돌아가는 때가 온다고 믿는다. 그립다고 돌아가 지는 것이 아닌, 이미 자신이 안에 갖고 있던 것에 언제라도 이미 돌아가져 있는 것을 뜻한다. 우리는 마치 돌아갈 곳이 있기에 자유로운 미성년의 모습을 보고 있다.

캔디(CANDY)의 이번 싱글은 우리가 안정적으로 슈게이즈(Shoegaze) 밴드로써 기대하는 느낌과 확실히 다르다. 오히려 80년대 포스트 펑크(Post-Punk)스러운 면이 주를 이루고 있다. 하지만 “폭발적인 아밍이나 노이즈가 부족해서 아쉽네요.”라고 말하고 싶지 않을 정도로, 이들의 음악적 가능성을 넓게 환기시켜 주고 있다.

단순함 자체로 자극적인 앨범이다. 세상에 좋은 것은 극복할 수 없이 많아졌고, 이펙터를 더욱 가득 채워 꽉 찬 사운드도 뽑아낼 수 있겠지만, 화장 안한 맨얼굴이면 어떻고 바지 끝이 조금 끌리면 어떤가. 지금 우리에게 중요한 건 넘어져도 다시 달려가 황홀한 기분 이대로 끌어안아야 한다는 것이다. - Roman Jakk
